Treatment considerations and tips we have identified include:
- Thyroid medication normally is required for a dog’s entire life. That said, we have observed highly stressed Basenjis with abnormal thyroid function return to normal thyroid function once stressed was relieved. Should you encounter a similar outcome, continue periodic thyroid testing even if your dog shows no symptoms; a low level of medication may be required to avoid more complicated health issues.
- Medication should be given twice daily an hour before meals. Do not administer with calcium or soy products.
- Canned loaf-formed food makes good packing material for thyroid medications. To avoid food waste, consider using a small can of cat food (after ensuring it does not have calcium, including milk products, or soy added).
